Do I Need a UV Water Treatment System?

A straight answer for bore, tank and rainwater users deciding whether UV is necessary

If your home or lifestyle block runs on a bore, a rainwater tank or a stream rather than town supply, you’ve probably wondered whether you really need UV treatment — or whether your water is “probably fine”. This guide explains what a UV system actually does, who genuinely needs one, what it can’t do, and how to size one for your house, so you can decide with confidence rather than guesswork.

What a UV system actually does

A UV water treatment system passes your water over an ultraviolet lamp housed in a quartz sleeve. The UV light scrambles the DNA of microorganisms so they can’t reproduce or make you sick. It’s chemical-free sterilisation — no chlorine, no dosing, no change to the taste or smell of your water.

Bacteria — including E. coli, the classic indicator of faecal contamination from birds, possums or stock.
Viruses — which are too small for almost any filter cartridge to catch.
Protozoa — giardia and cryptosporidium, both common in NZ rural supplies and notoriously resistant to chlorine.

A properly specified residential unit delivers a UV dose of 40 mJ/cm² (Class A), which is the level recognised for treating water of unknown microbiological quality — exactly what a private supply is.

Who needs UV — and who doesn’t

The short version: if your drinking water doesn’t come from a treated town supply, you should assume it needs disinfection. NZ drinking water standards, administered by Taumata Arowai, treat E. coli as a fail at any detectable level — and private supplies fail that test far more often than owners expect.

Roof and tank water — the highest-risk category. Birds and possums on the roof, leaf litter in the gutters and no first-flush diverter all wash contamination straight into the tank.
Shallow bores and wells — surface water, septic runoff and stock effluent can reach shallow groundwater, especially after heavy rain. See our bore water treatment page for the full picture.
Streams and springs — open to everything upstream, from stock to wild animals. Always treat.
Deep, sealed bores — lower risk, but still not guaranteed. A clear test today doesn’t rule out contamination after the next flood or a cracked bore casing.

What UV does NOT do

UV is a steriliser, not a filter. It kills bugs — it removes nothing. It won’t take out sediment, iron, manganese, hardness, tannin staining or off tastes and smells. If your bore water stains the toilet orange, UV won’t help with that (a common story in the Waikato, where iron, manganese and hardness are everyday bore problems).

Just as important, UV only works on clear water. Particles in cloudy water shadow the microorganisms from the lamp, letting them pass through alive. That’s why every UV system needs pre-filtration — a sediment cartridge down to around 5 micron as a minimum, with 1 micron ideal ahead of the lamp. Signs you need UV now

A water test showing E. coli or coliforms — the definitive answer. E. coli means faecal contamination is reaching your water; treat before anyone drinks it again.
Unexplained gut upsets — recurring stomach bugs in the household, or visitors who get sick when locals seem fine (locals often build partial tolerance).
After floods or heavy rain — flooding pushes surface contamination into bores and tanks; a supply that tested clean before an event can be unsafe after it.
New bore, new tank or new tenants — any change to the supply, or vulnerable people (infants, elderly, immune-compromised) moving in, is the right trigger to treat.

Sizing a UV system

UV units are rated by flow. Push water through faster than the rated flow and the dose drops below the level needed to sterilise — so the unit must match your household’s peak flow, not its average.

Install at the point of entry — one whole-house unit where the water enters the building, so every tap, shower and appliance gets treated water.
Match the flow rate — a typical NZ home with two bathrooms needs roughly 40–60 litres per minute; small cottages can run smaller units, larger homes need more.
Budget for maintenance — UV lamps run about 9,000 hours, so replace the lamp every 12 months even if it still glows (output fades long before it fails). Clean the quartz sleeve about every 6 months and replace it roughly every 2 years, along with regular filter cartridge changes.

Frequently asked questions

My water test came back clean — do I still need UV?

A clean test only tells you the water was safe on the day the sample was taken. Private supplies change with the weather, the season and what’s happening on the land around them. If the source is a roof, shallow bore or stream, UV is cheap insurance against the day the test would have failed.

Does UV change the taste of my water?

No. UV adds nothing to the water and takes nothing out, so taste, smell and chemistry are unchanged. If you have taste or odour issues, that’s a job for the carbon stage of your pre-filtration, not the UV lamp.

How often does the UV lamp need replacing?

Every 12 months. Lamps are rated for about 9,000 hours of continuous running, and their germicidal output drops well before the light visibly dies. Swap the lamp annually, clean the quartz sleeve about every 6 months, and replace the sleeve roughly every 2 years.
