Is My Tank or Rainwater Safe to Drink? A New Zealand Homeowner’s Guide
A plain-language guide for households on roof-collected rainwater
If your home is on a lifestyle block or rural property and your drinking water comes off the roof into a tank, this guide is for you. We’ll explain why tank water that looks fine often isn’t safe, how to find out for sure, and the practical steps that make it reliably safe to drink.
Why roof water looks clean but often isn’t
Rain itself is close to pure. The problem is everything it washes over on the way to your tank. Your roof is an open catchment, and it collects more than water:
Bird and possum droppings — the single biggest source of faecal bacteria in NZ tank supplies.
Leaf litter and organic debris — rots in gutters and feeds bacterial growth in the tank.
Dead insects, rodents and the odd bird — in gutters, downpipes or the tank itself.
Roof and gutter materials — older roofs can shed lead flashing residue, zinc and paint flakes.

The real risks: E. coli, giardia and cryptosporidium
The organisms that matter most in roof water are the ones that come from animal droppings:
E. coli — the standard indicator of faecal contamination. If a test finds E. coli, faecal material has reached your water and other nasties may be present too.
Giardia and cryptosporidium — protozoan parasites that cause prolonged gut illness. Cryptosporidium is notably resistant to chlorine, which is one reason UV is the preferred treatment for tank supplies.
Symptoms are the familiar ones — cramps, diarrhoea, nausea — and here’s the catch: most households never connect them to the water. A dodgy tummy gets blamed on “a bug going around”, while the actual source keeps sitting in the tank. Visitors, young children, the elderly and anyone with a weakened immune system are hit hardest. Taumata Arowai, the national water services regulator, treats any detectable E. coli in drinking water as unacceptable — a useful benchmark for your own supply.
How to tell: get the water tested
The only way to know is a laboratory test. An accredited lab can check a sample for E. coli for a modest fee, and your regional council can point you to one. As a rule of thumb:
Test about once a year as routine practice.
Test again after any roof or gutter work — new roofing, painting, repairs or spouting replacement.
Test after floods or major storms — heavy weather stirs up tank sediment and washes concentrated debris off the roof.
Remember a test is a snapshot of one day. A clear result in March doesn’t cover the possum that visits your roof in June — which is why prevention and treatment matter more than any single result.
Prevention: keep contamination out of the tank
Good tank hygiene reduces the load on any treatment system and keeps the water fresher:
Gutter maintenance — clear gutters at least twice a year, more if you have overhanging trees.
Leaf and first-flush diverters — a first-flush diverter dumps the first, dirtiest run-off from each rainfall before it reaches the tank; cheap insurance.
Tank inlet and overflow screens — fine mesh keeps insects, frogs and rodents out.
Tank cleaning — have the sludge vacuumed out every two to three years; the sediment layer on the bottom harbours bacteria.
Treatment: sediment filtration plus UV sterilisation
Prevention lowers the risk, but only treatment makes tank water reliably safe every day of the year. The proven setup is a two-stage point-of-entry system fitted where the water enters the home:
Stage 1 — sediment cartridge filtration. Cartridges strip out silt and fine debris, typically down to 5 micron and ideally 1 micron, so the water runs clear.
Stage 2 — UV sterilisation. The clear water then passes a UV lamp that inactivates bacteria, viruses and protozoa, including chlorine-resistant cryptosporidium. Look for a unit delivering a 40 mJ/cm² dose (Class A) sized to your home’s flow rate.
What it involves and roughly costs. A quality whole-house filter-plus-UV system typically runs from around $1,000 to $2,500 for the hardware depending on flow rate, plus a plumber’s installation. Ongoing costs are predictable: sediment cartridges changed every 6–12 months, the UV lamp replaced annually (lamps are rated about 9,000 hours — around 12 months of continuous use), and the quartz sleeve cleaned six-monthly and replaced roughly every two years. Renting vs owning: who does what
If you own the home, a point-of-entry system is a one-off investment that protects the whole household and adds genuine value to a rural property.
If you rent, the landlord is generally responsible for supplying safe drinking water — if you’re getting repeated gut upsets on a tank supply, raise it and ask for a water test. In the meantime, boiling water for one minute or fitting a benchtop drinking water filter protects you without touching the landlord’s plumbing.
Frequently asked questions
My family has drunk our tank water for years with no problems. Do we really need treatment?
Possibly you’ve been lucky, and possibly mild gut upsets have simply been blamed on other things. Long-term residents often develop partial tolerance that visitors, children and elderly guests don’t share. A lab test costs little and tells you where you actually stand.
Can I just boil the water instead of installing a UV system?
Boiling for one minute does kill bugs and is a sound short-term measure. But it only covers the water you remember to boil — not brushing teeth, washing salad or the glass a child fills at the bathroom tap. A point-of-entry filter and UV system treats every tap automatically, all day.
Why does a UV system need a sediment filter in front of it?
UV only works on clear water. Suspended particles shield bacteria and protozoa from the UV light, letting them pass through untreated. Filtering to 5 micron — ideally 1 micron — before the UV chamber ensures the lamp delivers its full sterilising dose to every drop.
