How Often Should You Replace a UV Lamp or Quartz Sleeve?
Keeping your UV system actually sterilising, not just glowing
If you already run a UV system on your bore, tank or rural supply, this guide is for you. The tricky thing about UV treatment is that a lamp can look like it is working perfectly — bright blue glow, no error on the controller — while quietly no longer killing bugs. UV disinfection depends on dose, not brightness, and dose fades with age. Here is a plain-language schedule for when to replace lamps and sleeves, how to spot trouble early, and how to do the swap safely.
Why UV lamps expire even when they still glow
A UV lamp sterilises by emitting UV-C light at 254 nanometres, which scrambles the DNA of bacteria, viruses and protozoa so they cannot reproduce. To be effective, a class A drinking-water system needs to deliver a dose of at least 40 mJ/cm². The catch is that the lamp’s UV output drops steadily over its life even though the visible glow barely changes — the blue light you can see is not the germicidal light doing the work.
Most household UV lamps are rated for about 9,000 hours of operation, which works out to roughly 12 months of continuous use. By the end of that period the UV-C output has fallen far enough that you can no longer count on a reliable kill, even if the lamp is still lit. The rule is simple: replace the lamp once a year. The quartz sleeve — the part everyone forgets
The lamp does not sit directly in your water. It is protected by a clear quartz sleeve, a thin glass tube that keeps the lamp dry while letting UV light pass through into the water flow. Because that sleeve is the window between the lamp and the water, anything that coats it blocks the UV before it can reach a single bug.
Clean the sleeve about every 6 months. On Waikato bore water especially, a film of scale, iron or manganese builds up on the glass and can quietly cut your dose by half or more. Wipe it down with a soft cloth and a little vinegar or citric acid to lift mineral film, then rinse and refit carefully.
Replace the sleeve roughly every 2 years, or sooner if it is scratched, cracked, etched or clouded and will not wipe clear. Clouded quartz scatters UV light and can never be cleaned back to full clarity, so a tired sleeve undoes the good work of a brand-new lamp.
Warning signs your system needs attention
Modern controllers do some of the watching for you, but not all systems have alarms and none catch everything. Watch for:
Alarm or beeping — most controllers count lamp hours and sound off or flash when the lamp is due, so never just silence it and carry on.
Water test failures — a positive result for E. coli or total coliforms means faecal contamination is getting through; treat it as urgent.
Reduced flow — low or dropping flow often points to a blocked pre-filter, which can also mean cloudy water is reaching the UV and shielding bugs from the light.
Visible fouling — if you can see a coating on the sleeve when you open the chamber, your dose is already compromised.
How to replace a lamp or sleeve — the safe overview
The job is straightforward once you have done it once, but order and care matter. A rough sequence:
1. Power off — switch off and unplug the controller. UV-C light harms eyes and skin, so never look at a lit lamp out of its chamber.
2. Isolate the water — close the inlet and outlet valves and relieve pressure so you are not fighting a flow when you open the chamber.
3. Withdraw the lamp — gently disconnect the lamp connector and slide the lamp out. Do not touch the glass of the lamp with bare fingers — skin oils create hot spots that shorten its life. Handle it with a clean cloth or gloves.
4. Remove and inspect the sleeve — undo the retaining nut, ease the quartz sleeve out, and check the O-rings. Renew the O-rings whenever you replace the sleeve, and smear a little silicone grease so they seat without pinching.
5. Reassemble and restore — refit sleeve, lamp and connector, open the water slowly, check for leaks, then power up and reset the lamp timer.

Change the pre-filters at the same time
UV only works on water that is already clear. Sediment and organic particles create shadows where bugs hide from the light, which is why every UV system needs pre-filtration down to about 5 micron (1 micron is ideal). Those pre-filter cartridges load up over time and choke your flow, so the neatest habit is to change the pre-filter cartridges at the same time you service the UV — lamp, sleeve check and filters all on one visit. Keep a maintenance calendar
The single best thing you can do for a UV system is write things down. A simple calendar takes the guesswork out and stops a “still glowing” lamp lulling you into a false sense of security:
Every 6 months — clean the quartz sleeve and check the pre-filters.
Every 12 months — replace the UV lamp and change the pre-filter cartridges.
Every 2 years — replace the quartz sleeve and O-rings (sooner if scratched or clouded).

Frequently asked questions
My UV lamp is still glowing blue — do I really need to replace it?
Yes. The visible blue glow is not the germicidal UV-C light that kills bugs. UV-C output fades steadily and, after about 9,000 hours (roughly 12 months of continuous use), it has dropped too far to guarantee a safe dose — even though the lamp looks perfectly normal. Replace the lamp annually regardless of how bright it appears.
Can I clean the quartz sleeve instead of replacing it?
Cleaning and replacing are two different jobs. Clean the sleeve about every 6 months to wipe off scale and iron film that block UV — a little vinegar or citric acid lifts most mineral deposits. But once the glass is scratched, etched or clouded it will not clean back to full clarity, so plan to replace the sleeve roughly every 2 years or whenever it will not wipe clear.
Do I need to change my water filters when I service the UV?
It is the sensible way to do it. UV relies on clear water, so a clogged or dirty pre-filter both restricts your flow and lets shielded bugs slip past the lamp. Changing the pre-filter cartridges at the same time as the annual lamp swap keeps everything on one schedule and protects your UV dose.
